A growing data footprint in a high-trust environment

A leading independent girls’ school has long been recognised for its commitment to data maturity in education. But as its data capability matured, a new challenge emerged: visibility and control over sensitive information spread across an increasingly complex hybrid environment. As the school continued to expand its data products and digital capability, sensitive information naturally proliferated across systems. Despite its strong data maturity, the school lacked a structured, scalable way to identify, classify, and prioritise sensitive data across its environment—limiting its ability to clearly communicate risk and take targeted action.

Turning dispersed data into governed, usable insight



To enable comprehensive visibility, One51 implemented Microsoft Purview Data Map across their hybrid environment, spanning both on-premises and cloud data sources. This provided the foundation for consistent discovery and classification at scale. Custom classification rules were developed specifically for their environment. To transform discovery into operational value, assets were organised into a structured hierarchy aligned to the school’s three core domains. This structure enabled data owners to directly manage their own domains, distributing accountability without compromising control. The engagement concluded with a prioritised 12-month data security roadmap, carefully sequenced and effort-sized to give the school a clear path forward without requiring re-scoping or further discovery cycles.  The school now has a complete, searchable inventory of sensitive data across its hybrid environment, including clear identification of high-risk assets containing concentrations of personal and sensitive information.
