Last week, One51 hosted the Executive Breakfast event – Innovation vs. Regulation: Can AI Have Both? where we had the opportunity to present to our clients and share our views on how to maintain the right balance between AI innovation and governance, ensuring organisations don’t block AI adoption under the guise of risk management.
Our guest speaker, Simon Kriss, a leading voice on AI adoption in Australia and worldwide, described a widespread hesitation among businesses regarding AI adoption, something he refers to as FOMF—Fear of Moving Forward. While most organisations recognise AI’s potential, they remain stuck at the starting line, overwhelmed by options, vendor promises, and a lack of understanding.
“Many leaders,” Simon explains, “don’t understand AI enough to know what questions to ask.” This lack of clarity often leads to stalled initiatives, defaulting responsibility to IT departments or total inaction.
His message is clear: AI adoption is no longer optional. Organisations that hesitate risk falling behind, while those that embrace AI can transform their operations and business models.
Governance Doesn’t Have to Kill Innovation
Simon’s concept of Fear of Moving Forward (FOMF) illustrates why governance often becomes a convenient excuse to avoid action. In his view, governance and risk management are critical but must be pragmatic, not paralytic. Many organisations default to “No” policies, driven by fear and misunderstanding, which stifles innovation.
Simon’s approach to governance offers guidelines, not blanket prohibitions. Educating teams on how to use AI safely, rather than simply saying they can’t.
Start Small, Think Big
Simon advocates for a phased approach to AI adoption. Rather than launching multiple AI initiatives simultaneously, he recommends starting with a single, manageable use case before scaling efforts.
For many businesses, this could mean:
- Automating repetitive tasks, such as monthly report generation.
- Summarising customer interactions in CRM systems.
- Using AI to create internal knowledge bases for quick information retrieval.
While simple, small wins deliver measurable efficiency gains and build organisational confidence in AI capabilities.
Key Takeaways
Adopting AI can feel complex, risky, and uncertain—especially in an evolving regulatory landscape. Yet waiting for perfect clarity only delays competitive advantage. The organisations that move forward implement balanced governance frameworks that enable safe, controlled innovation without stifling progress.
Start by focusing on low-risk, high-impact internal use cases, such as automating internal reporting or document summarisation. These initiatives build confidence and demonstrate value quickly while minimising exposure.
Above all, recognise that Fear of Moving Forward (FOMF) is a common barrier—but one that can be overcome. With the right leadership education and practical governance, organisations can unlock AI’s potential today rather than wait for an uncertain tomorrow.
So, the answer to the original question, “Innovation vs. Regulation: Can AI Have Both?” is yes if governance facilitates experimentation and manages risk transparently.
